Get to know Jay Quarles!

Jay was born in the not so far away state of Arkansas and has been a Tennessee resident for 8 years. We’ve been noticing Jay’s work for a while and as of May 2013 we gave in to his precious face and amazing charm and offered him a spot here. While he specializes in black and grey and traditional style art, he’s a jack of all trades and takes on a lot of different styles. Get to know Marty “Riet” McEwen!

Our beloved Marty is named after country singer Marty Robbins and grew up just outside of Nashville in LaVergne TN. Marty’s interest in tattooing led him here because he was a fan of Josh Woods illustrated artwork and he ended up apprenticing under Josh here at Black 13 in 2008. As his apprenticeship came to a close, he started tattooing full time with us in 2010. Marty’s art background revolves heavily around graffiti where he gets to bring his amazing illustrations to life on large canvases and outdoor walls. He was given the name Riet from a good friend that was showing him the ropes in 1995 and it was suggested he use the e instead of the o in the spelling to stand out and give more variations in the way he could stylize the writing of the word. He’s a huge fan of the 80’s and you will see this a lot in his subject matter ranging from 80’s cartoons and action figures, wrestling, horror characters, etc. Marty would like to remind everyone that he’s a lover, not a fighter, and that a country boy can survive! A little trip down memory lane

We are quickly approaching our five year anniversary and we can’t believe how fast time flies! As most of you know, we moved into a larger space about a year ago and we recently came across build out photos and decided to share. It’s crazy to see how the space transformed into what we have now and we would like to thank Ochoa Bros Construction for help along the way. If you haven’t been in to see the new space, please do! We are still located in Cummins Station, just a little further down the hall from our old suite. Make sure to come out our FREE anivseray party on August 3rd at Mercy Lounge!

We just updated our calendar today with great artists that will be joining us within the next few months. If you’re interested in booking with them while they’re here, you’re welcome to contact us or the artist directly.

We’d like to welcome Patrick Copeland to the B13 family! Patrick has signed on to manage our customer and artist relations as well as overseeing other aspects here in the shop. He brings a lot to the table and we are happy to have him!

We are starting to plan for our 5 year anniversary and wanted to say thanks to everyone for making this a very fast paced and amazing 5 years. Please come out and celebrate with us August 3rd at Mercy Lounge here in Nashville for a night of great music. Best of all, its free!

We are finally able to start moving forward with bookings for Amanda Leadman. She’s a busy lady and we are currently working off a wait list for her scheduling. If you’re on the wait list, thanks for your patience! If you would like to schedule with her just give us a call or stop by and we can discuss your ideas with her and add you to the list.

2013 is flying by! We want to thank all of our customers for your continued support and allowing this business to continue to grow. What’s new? We are super happy to have Jay Quarles working with us full time. If you haven’t seen his work, take a look in our gallery online. For those of you who don’t know, we do a big human/zombie prom every year that just took place April 27th. It’s called Promocalypse and it was a huge success! If you’ve never been, we suggest you join us next year. Can’t make the trip to Nashville for a tattoo? We will be doing some more travels over the next few months and will post our travel dates here on the site. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to stop by, give us a call, or shoot us an email. We are excited for what the rest of 2013 brings and we wish you all the very best!

Promocalypse 2013 days away!

Promocalypse 2013 is quickly approaching! Make sure to join us Saturday April 27th at Cannery Ballroom for a night of fun, dancing, and best of all, ZOMBIES!

What is the PROMOCALYPSE?
It’s a prom! Dancing, DJs, balloons, streamers, the works. The only difference is that you don’t have to sneak out to the parking lot to drink (as long as you’re 21 & up). Oh, and the zombies. Cities across the world have hosted Zombie Walks, Zombie Crawls, and Zombie Proms. It’s your chance to get creative with makeup and costume to become a zombie for one night, and join the horde of the walking dead to terrorize the living.
